General Information about Your State Council

What is the role of the State Council?

One of the State Council's roles is to disseminate information and strategies from SHRM National and its Northeastern Region to all members, prospective members and chapters across the state.

Another key role is to hear the needs, issues and suggestions of SHRM members and channel that information to SHRM. The overarching Council goal is the advancement of the profession in this state.

Members

The State Council members in Connecticut are nominated and elected or appointed in November of each year to serve for a single calendar year term.  The Council usually holds only four (4) centrally located meetings a year to identify long and short term goals, develop and provide supportive services to members and chapters, strengthen our statewide network and align with SHRM's nationwide goals.  This limited time commitment generally makes it easy to recruit human resource colleagues to serve in some capacity.  The assignments are usually narrow in scope and require a reasonable number of volunteer hours.

Typically a State Council will range in size from 10 to 20  participants, based on the goals that have been set for that Council year.  The Council primarily serves four separate constituencies: the Society of Human Resource Management, the officers and members of Connecticut SHRM chapters, the Connecticut at-large members who are not affiliated with local chapters, and non-affiliated human resource professionals who work for companies in the State of Connecticut.

Each year the State Council Director has the flexibility to coordinate the Council to complete entirely new goals and a budget that are established specifically for that calendar year.

The Council participants could include:

*Those who have previously served as a Board member or committee chairperson of one of the current seven CT HR chapters,

*At-large members who wish to contribute to the state HR community without being committed to an individual chapter,

*Local chapter members who are experienced in the human resource profession and have bypassed the chapter leadership but wish to be more active on a state-wide basis.

One of the many pleasures of participating on the Council is the ability to work closely with other senior and savvy HR professionals from across the state.  One of the Council's primary responsibilities is to assist the chapters by coordinating efforts across the state.  The Council also tries, when requested, to support the work of the chapters by assisting the chapter officers with strategic problems and opportunities.

Professional Development Opportunities

Visit our Statewide Calendar of Events.  These are opportunities for those in the human resource profession to expand their knowledge and professional networking.  This is an example of the efforts of the Council in coordinating the hard work that the chapters do to energize and educate human resource practitioners in all types of companies-public or private, profit or non-profit, large or small.

Goals

Ongoing goals include increased communication to the chapters; publicity of your chapter events so that SHRM at-large members and others are aware of your chapter; updating this web site with current chapter events and news; continue to publicize our Webinars; and to make sure the Council is financially sound so as to meet our objectives and goals.

In the recent past years the Council has provided several significant and well attended educational conferences on Organization Development, Building HR Capability and Credibility, Legislative Affairs and Workforce Development while also hosting a number of roundtables for senior human resource executives.

We also are becoming involved in planning for the longer-term success and stability of the Council.  The Council is a financially secure organization with a significant opportunity to contribute to the greater good of the Connecticut human resource community.  If you are interested in participating or receiving more information on the work of the Council, please contact us.   If you are new to Connecticut, participating in the activities of the State Council and its chapters is one of the best ways to acclimate yourself to the state and the profession.  Enjoy your review of the balance of the Web site and don't hesitate to call on anyone of us if you need professional assistance.
